Coffee & Tea in Calgary

Coffee and dessert at Phil and Sebastian

For me, a coffee/ tea house should be a small meeting place. A place where you sit and sip coffee/ tea for the socializing aspect of it: you watch people coming and going, the music plays in the background, the place is almost-full and the nice murmur of people chatting warms you up. I’m quite picky about such places, so my taste may not be your taste. But here are some nice places I like to go to in Calgary:

La Boulangerie – Bakery Cafe

Pastries and coffee, La Boulangerie on 4th Street.

I have meant to try La Boulangerie for a long, long time! So when our friends suggested it for brunch, I was very excited! This is the type of cafe we should have every other block, including those dreadful suburbs. Then I’d finally be happy with Calgary (though I can’t promise I’d stop complaining about it!).

Roasted chicken clubhouse.

Back in 2011, I blogged about this little Kensington gem. Although I went back several times, I always forgot to take pictures! This time, I managed to remember and snapped two shots of our food: the roasted chicken clubhouse ($12) and the brownie.

Another cool place for coffee/ tea in downtown: Good Earth, Calgary Board of Education building

Good Earth Cafe

I confess to being an urbanite: I love walkable urban spaces, designed with people (and preferably, people wearing fancy shoes!) in mind. The Calgary Board of Education downtown is such a place – trees, benches, glass buildings, cement. And a new Good Earth cafe. Something for the eye, something for the stomach, and nothing to ruin my shoes!

Extreme Bean Eatery – Coffee & tea in Calgary

Extreme Bean Eatery

One of my favorite things to complain about is the lack of proper food and beverage options in Calgary’s (few urban) parks. Yes, there’s River Cafe and the ice cream truck in Prince’s Island, but the first one is expensive and I’m not an ice cream person (ridiculous, I know, but I can’t help it). On a perfect spring day, we were strolling down Bow River Pathway and came across Extreme Bean Eatery: inconspicuous building, with what could be a perfect patio (3303 3 Avenue NW).

Best iced chocolate – Calgary coffee shops

Say you don’t drink coffee. Say you had enough tea for the day. Say you like hot chocolate but it’s just one of those hot summer days. What’s left?

Vendome Cafe

Check update June 2012.

This little cafe in Sunnyside/ Kensington (940-2nd Ave NW) is definitely a neighbourhood favourite. As you come in, you can see the big menu on the wall, just above the barista. There are quite a few interesting dishes to choose from: breakfast options based on eggs or french toast, lunch options such as soups and salads, and a variety of desserts that please not only the palate, but also the eye.
