The patio at the Fionn MacCool’s Irish pub in Eau Claire market is a really neat one (255 Barclay Parade SW, Sheraton Calgary, Eau Claire). I wish other places in Calgary would invest a bit more in the design of their patios. A few large pots of flowers make the difference and the patio is separated from the curb by a few trees and bushes. A few umbrellas provide some shade but also the illusion of privacy.
We were lucky to be there during one of the many festivals in the Eau Claire Market – there’s nothing more urban than people watching. The prices are not the cheapest in town, but for us, the urban feel of the place was worth the money.
We (a party of two) chose the 6oz steak sandwich which came with a choice of fries or salad (13.50 each). The steak, topped with crisp fried onion and mushrooms, was quite good. It’s a dish that does not have any sauces, cheese or mayo, and that was exactly what we were looking for. We also got a beer ($5.85) and a fountain pop (2.50). On that note, I really really really wish places in Calgary would give people more non-alcoholic choices – yeah, I realize it’s an Irish pub, but a freshly squeezed lemonade or orange juice is not such a big deal to offer, at least during summer. The bill came to $37 before tip.
